PAIN OF SALVATION finalizing new studio album release

March 5th, 2010

Additionally, Pain of Salvation have also just finished works for their upcoming studio album release, “Road Salt Ivory”, and Gildenlöw comment as follows:

The first part of ‘Road Salt’ is finished – mixed, mastered and delivered! It is a 12 track album of sweaty grovel, asphalt butterflies, untreaded paths and brave decisions. It will be presented to the world in one standard edition and one limited director’s cut, of which we of course recommend the latter one. See, as usual, we refuse to add some stuff haphazardly to put together a limited product - we always see the larger version as the “real” one; the one that makes us the proudest. The release is scheduled for May…”

Pain of Salvation’s video clip for the title track of their current EP release, “Linoleum”, directed by Owe Lingwall of Village Road Film can be watched on our media page here.

PAIN OF SALVATION in next round of Sweden’s song contest “Melodifestivalen”

March 5th, 2010

After having surprisingly passed the initial round of the national Swedish competition for the Eurovision song contest, Melodifestivalen, Pain of Salvation are now gearing up for performing their intense song “Road Salt” as part of the next round’s “Andra Chansen” (Second Chance) show in Örebro, Sweden tomorrow, Saturday March 6 at 8pm CET.

Once again, the contest will be broadcasted live by Sweden’s National TV-Station SVT and it can also be internationally followed online at this location: www.svt.se/melodifestivalen

The contest is being watched by several million people within Sweden and Pain of Salvation have successfully managed to make an outstanding impact with their very atmospheric rendition of the song “Road salt” as well as their concept of “Going back to letting the song be the focal point, not the fancy dresses or the recipe production and structure of the performance”, as Pain of Salvation’s frontman Daniel Gildenlöw mentions, before adding, “Just us. Playing a song meant to touch your heart. Stripped down. Naked. Brave. Old-school.”

Please pass the word around, show your support to Pain of Salvation and give the band feedback to their performance afterwards via their websites…

ASPERA signs with InsideOut Music

November 26th, 2009

InsideOut Music has announced the signing of the progressive metal band Aspera to a worldwide deal. The group’s debut album, “Ripples”, is scheduled for release on January 25, 2010.
Aspera

These five aspiring musicians from Skien, Norway, are truly what can be described as “youngsters” and “newcomers,” being just 20 years of age (all born in the last quarter of the year 1989!) and even only 18-19 years old whilst producing “Ripples”.

The name Aspera is taken from Latin and stands for “thorns” or “rugged ground,” which describes the band’s complex and colorful sound in an appropriate way.

Despite their young individual age, Aspera have gathered previous experience under the band name Illusion and shared stages in their native Norway with bands like Pagan’s MInd, Circus Maximus, Audrey Horne and most recently also debuting internationally as support band for former Nightwish vocalist Tarja Turunen on two shows in Spain and one in Switzerland.

Aspera cite acts like Pain Of Salvation, Pagan’s Mind, Symphony X and Dream Theater as common favorites and stylistic influences and the band’s debut full-length album “Ripples” was mixed and mastered at Fascination Street Studios in Sweden by Jens Bogren, who has previously produced bands such as Opeth, Paradise Lost and Symphony X. Bogren was obviously impressed by the potential of the young musicians and comments on “Ripples” as follows: “The debut album from Aspera is one of the best progressive metal albums I’ve heard in a looong time! Since 1992, to be exact! It was an honor helping the band getting the album the way they deserve.”

Based on the strength of “Ripples”, the band had been approached by a number of labels but it was what InsideOut Music had to say that interested them the most.

“The deal they offered us was perfect,” comments vocalist Atle. “It showed that their ideas for the band matched our goals and aspirations, and it was exactly the deal we wanted.” “And we’re big fans of InsideOut,” adds guitarist Robin. “Look at the calibre of artists they’ve got! It’s a great label, we’ve always wanted to work with them, and they made us an offer we literally couldn’t refuse. It’s a great opportunity for us as a band.”

“It’s important to have the right partners to launch a new band,” says Aspera’s manager Manuela Froehlich. “The knowledge, expertise and support of a label like InsideOut is exactly what Aspera need to be able to realize their true potential.”

“Ripples” consists of 10 extremely well-composed and varied tracks, wrapped in a dynamic and a powerful production.

SHADOW GALLERY reveal details Digital Ghosts

October 13th, 2009

Progressive metallers Shadow Gallery have now launched a first full new promo song off their 6th studio effort “Digital Ghosts”, which will be released on October 23, 2009 in Europe and November 3, 2009 in North America via InsideOutMusic. Please visit www.myspace.com/officialshadowgallery and/or www.progarchives.com to listen to the track ‘Gold Dust’.

Shadow Gallery’s Brendt Allman comments the song as follows: “Gold Dust is one of the 1st songs that I started writing for this new record. I just loved the D/ B flat/ E progression used in the chorus, then I just built the other parts around that.  I knew that it could be a strong chorus and it turned out to be one of the best on the record.  I particularly love the simplicity of the chord changes in the second half of the song, riding one note on the guitar in machine gun fashion while having pretty chord changes over the top of it.  I love the fact that there are 4 lead vocalists on that section as well.”

Next to the regular CD and Digital Download version of Digital Ghosts, which introduces new lead singer Brian Ashland, there will also be a very special limited edition Digipak released in Europe with expanded and slightly modified artwork as well as 4 special bonus tracks*:

Digital Ghosts Limited European Digipak:

1. With Honor
2. Venom
3. Pain
4. Gold Dust
5. Strong
6. Digital Ghost
7. Haunted
-
8. Two Shadows*
9. Gold Dust (Demo)*
10. In Your Window*
11. World Of Fantasy (Demo)*

‘Two Shadows’ is a partly upgraded version of the Japan bonus track from the previous album “Room V”, featuring vocals by former vocalist Mike Baker, who tragically passed away in October 2008. ‘Gold Dust (Demo)’ features vocals by Carl-Cadden James, ‘In Your Window’ is an A capella version of vocal harmonies of the album song ‘Digital Ghost’ and ‘World Of Fantasy (Demo)’ is a non-album song, also featuring vocals by Mike Baker.

New DEVIN TOWNSEND PROJECT album Addicted coming in November

September 10th, 2009

DEVIN TOWNSEND PROJECT "Addicted" CD coverThe second album from The Devin Townsend Project will be called Addicted. The release is scheduled on the November 16th for Europe, November 17th for North America.

Devin gave us an update on his website earlier, here’s what he had to say:

“Hey folks, Dev here with the update for the second instalment of the DTP (Devin Townsend Project). We are just readying the release of album 2, Addicted so here’s a few brief words:

With Ki, I kind of strode out in uncharted territories for myself musically, and loved the experience. But during the course of writing this 4 record project, it was inevitable that I would end up writing a selection of tunes that were very much in line with my back catalogue. This group of songs is the second record in the series, and it is called Addicted.

Musically, Addicted is along the lines of the big, wall of sound hard rock / heavy metal of Ocean Machine and Accelerated Evolution (even Physicist at points).  It is a very direct and ‘to the point’ album with an emphasis on groove and the chorus. In the past, lots of my records end up taking a kind of Pink Floyd-ish route (between song meandering etc.) … Addicted is really simple: 11 rocking songs and no bullshit.

I wanted to make a record that was heavy, without being dark or depressing. When I got into metal it was for the energy behind it, but somewhere along the way that energy started getting really negative. In music right now, there’s a ton of heavy bands that are really depressing to listen to loudly. I wanted to make a record without any real deep metaphor on the surface. Something that sounds good, has a good beat, and a positive feeling. It is still heavy as-all-get-out, but I think there’s a differentiation to be made between being ‘peaceful’, and being peaceful but wanting to celebrate loud, crushing music.
The vocal duties on this record are handled by myself and Anneke van Giersbergen. (I wanted to have male and female vocals kind of ‘tell the story’ so to speak). It’s an honour to work with her and she has a lovely, lovely energy. The other musicians on this record are Ryan Van Poederooyen on drums, Brian Waddell on bass, and Mark Cimino on guitars.

I love this record, it affects me in a way that I wasn’t prepared for. It’s a fully rocking album of optimism. If you just want to ‘play it loud’ without any crazy metaphor, this album might be for you!
On other notes:

I have been rehearsing with a new band, and we will start touring in early 2010, representing all the back catalogue of solo material, from Ki, Addicted, Physicist, Ziltoid, Terria, Ocean Machine, dtb, Infinity etc… I have some big plans for this and rehearsals are sounding amazing. The touring entity will be called ‘Devin Townsend’ and is essentially a way for me to get out there and interact again and showcase 15 years of music that never really got it’s fair shake.  We look forward to seeing you out there!

I will start the work on the fourth record Deconstruction in Los Angeles in October, some great plans for that… (and btw, THAT is a heavy record with a lot of metaphor…) news on that as it comes!
So I hope you will enjoy Addicted, in the theme of the dtp, the reason Addicted exists is maybe a little deeper than what the record sounds like up front. But up front, it kind of states:  ‘Life is tough, the world can be an ugly place…so lets forget about the dramas and ROCK – here’s some heavy guitars, big choruses and killer beats’

Song Titles:

ADDICTED / UNIVERSE IN A BALL / BEND IT LIKE BENDER! / BEAUTIFUL CRUSH / HYPERDRIVE / WILD HEARTS / IH-AH! / THE WAY HOME / NUMBERED / SOULS AWAKE! / OM
