DevilDriverSanta Barbara, California metallers DevilDriver recently recorded several songs at the legendary BBC Maida Vale Studios in London, England for an exclusive BBC Radio 1 “Rock Show” session which will air Monday night (November 23) as part of Daniel Carter’s program. The show will be available for streaming for seven days after the initial broadcast at this location.

According to a new online post by DevilDriver bassist Jon Miller, the Santa Barbara, California-based metallers have six songs “in the bag” for the group’s forthcoming album, which they “are looking to record sooner than later.” He added, “We want to go faster and heavier on this one to answer any question on a ‘direction’ that we may be undertaking.”

DevilDriver drummer John Boecklin elaborated further on the status of the songwriting sessions for the band’s next CD. Writing on the group’s official MySpace blog, Boecklin stated, “On our last record, I would say we stretched as far as we could outside of what we had done in the past, trying new and slower songs with vocal melody like ‘It’s In The Cards’ or the rock like feel of songs like ‘Back With A Vengeance’ and ‘Teach Me To Whisper’. For our latest effort, we feel like musically going for the throat, so to speak.

“Are we gonna make a death metal album? No! We always have a heavy emphasis on groove and hook. That will not change. We just feel we have a certain anger edge about us and the songs we are writing compared to our last one. It will not be rushed and if you are a fan, you will not be let down!!”

New DEVILDRIVER song available

May 22nd, 2009

DEVILDRIVER "Pray For Villains"The title track of the new DevilDriver album, Pray For Villains, is available for free download here (e-mail sign-up required). The new album will be released in the Benelux on July 10 as a regular CD and a special edition, which is a CD/DVD package featuring three bonus tracks, a behind-the-scenes DVD and expanded artwork.

Dez Fafara: The ‘Pray For Villains artwork is based on the title track on the record. The chorus goes, ‘They pray for villains when their heroes let them down.’ The concept of the villain saving the day — when all else fails, you turn your eyes towards the badass that gets the job done. Not the clean-cut guy — often big-talking, slowacting, lacking in spirit and conviction!

“I needed something graphic to tie into the hero/villain idea.”

“I, personally, have been collecting owls for some time and the owl in many different cultures is seen as both the hero and villain. In Ireland, an owl that enters a house must be killed at once, for if it flies away it will takes the luck of the house with it. In Australia, aborigines believe bats represent the souls of men and owls the souls of woman. Owls are therefore sacred in their culture because your sister is an owl and the owl is your sister. For the Aztecs, one of their evil gods wore a screech owl on his head and in the Celtic culture, the owl is the sign of the underworld. So, the owl was the obvious choice as I wanted to feel as connected to the artwork as I do to the music and also give DEVILDRIVER another icon to work with and even further define us a band!”

Pray For Villains was recorded at Edge of the Earth studios in Los Angeles with producer Logan Mader.

DevilDriver filmed a video for an the title track of the new album on April 9 with director Nathan Cox (Queens Of The Stone Age, Marilyn Manson, Linkin Park).

DEVILDRIVER in mixing mode

March 10th, 2009

DevilDriver

DevilDriver recently completed recording its fourth album, Pray For Villains, expected this summer on Roadrunner Records. The CD was recorded at Edge of the Earth studios in Los Angeles with producer Logan Mader.

Commented DevilDriver vocalist Dez Fafara: “I’ve been doing a shitload of listening of mixes. Got back from the studio late last night. Logan and I spent about 10 hours just fine-tuning some low-end issues and worked on the kick-drum tone. It’s getting close. Some of this stuff is gonna be really hard to pull off for me live. I had a hard time in the studio environment so I know it’s gonna be a bitch. Everyone has got it rougher this time around. Can’t wait for you to hear it.”

DEVILDRIVER finishes recording new album

February 17th, 2009

Drummer John Boecklin:”This album certainly has a more serious and focused vibe that we may have missed in previous efforts. One song in particular is the craziest double bass patterns I’ve ever done, guitar work you would not expect from us, mixed in with a really fresh vocal approach completely new from Dez. Its vibe is very new for us, but still totally brutal. I guess talking about it won’t do much; I’m just trying to state that you won’t be disappointed with us if you are DevilDriver fan. Yet there will be some surprises in Pray For Villains that are refreshing. I’m very proud of every member for stepping it up!”

“This is Dez, DevilDriver is currently recording in LA with Logan Mader and things are going great.  I’ve done 5 tracks on vox and Mike and Jeff are finishing overdubs and solos.  We are recording 15 tracks and we’ve stepped it up big time for this one.  The album is called Pray For Villains and will be out this summer. We know you will love it.  We can’t wait for everyone to hear the songs. Hail, Dez”

DevilDriver

Earlier Dez and drummer John Boecklin already told us this about the new album:

John Boecklin: “Everything is coming to an end at the studio now; we should be done tracking by Thursday or Friday. From there Logan will take on mixing alone. He likes to get the mix to a certain level of quality before anyone throws around opinions and ideas.
